Program Overview
According to Human Resources Development Canada, within the next five years there will be a shortage of ONE MILLION skilled trades people in Canada. This program will provide the student with the skills and knowledge required to work with skilled trades people on the job site in this well-paying industry. Participants will develop core abilities in the following areas:
forming and framing - theory and hands-on practice
blueprint reading
layout
tools and their safe use
how to form a foundation and frame a home
communication and interpersonal skills related to the construction workplace
skills and safe practices necessary to work safely and effectively in the industry
history of the trade
life and employability skills
researching and applying for jobs in the industry
The philosophy of this program is based on a humanistic, experiential approach, featuring slow immersion and hands-on training. Our program features small class sizes, with a maximum ratio of 12 students per instructor. We believe adults learn by doing - and we integrate this philosophy with classroom and clinical experience. Our graduates are competent and confident with their knowledge base and clinical skills.
The program will be conducted over 24 weeks. The first three weeks of life skills, employability skills, job and safety skills will be delivered in the classroom. A final week of job search and preparation skills will also be held in the classroom. The rest of the training will take place in a workshop and construction site hands-on working environment.
